Converting Online Videos

Downloading online videos to view on your computer*
  1. You need to have the YouTube URL for the video you wish to use. (ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYJEK6bv8Ys)
  2. Go to www.zamzar.com.
  3. Click URL in step 1 and then paste the URL.
  4. Choose what file type works for you. With videos on campus, I recommend choosing .wmv or .avi.
  5. Enter your email address. Zamzar will send you a link that you can go to in order to download the file. (I’ve never gotten any junk mail from them.)
  6. Check your email. Click the link they provide, and then choose “Download Now.” Save your file in your number folder.
  7. Your video should automatically open in Windows Media Player.

TeacherTube
  1. Sign up for a TeacherTube account at www.teachertube.com. (It takes less than a minute and video runs much more smoothly when you have an account.)
  2. Find the video you would like to save, and then click “Download this video.”
  3. Save the file to your computer. The desktop is fine, as you will need to convert this file.
  4. The file is a .flv file, which does not play well in Windows Media Player. To convert, go to www.zamzar.com.
  5. In step 1, click “Browse” to find the .flv file you downloaded.
  6.  Choose what file type works for you. With videos on campus, I recommend choosing .wmv or .avi.
  7. Enter your email address. Zamzar will send you a link that you can go to in order to download the file. (I’ve never gotten any junk mail from them.)
  8. Check your email. Click the link they provide, and then choose “Download Now.” Save your file in your number drive.
  9. Your video should automatically open in Windows Media Player.

Alternate approach: Sometimes TeacherTube will give you an error message when downloading a video. If this happens, try these steps:
1. On the TeacherTube page, copy the URL for the video.
2. Go to www.zamzar.com and click on the tab “Download Videos.”
3. Paste the URL in, convert to .wmv or .avi, enter your email address, and click convert.
4. Even if you get an error message, check your email. Sometimes it goes through anyway!

*All videos shown to students should be submitted to the media committee for approval. Please download the supplemental materials request form below.
